On a crisp fall day, a small group of masked community researchers fanned out on the streets of Slavic Village to ask residents a few questions about their sex lives. The effort was one part of a plan to understand why the Cleveland neighborhood has seen higher levels of new HIV cases diagnosed over the past five years, despite an overall downward trend in Cuyahoga County.
In 2020, the National Alliance for Caregiving reported that 53 million Americans were providing unpaid care to an adult with a health or functional need. After COVID-19 hit, caregivers had to make some hard choices—halt the home care services their loved ones depend on, or risk health and safety at home with care workers coming in for care.
Owner Rakefet Landes, who was a real estate agent and property manager in New York before moving to Cleveland three years ago, plans to move forward with renovations after receiving a $250,000 state historic tax credit last month.
“My goal is to take something that’s been neglected, overlooked, underserviced, and make it great,” said Ibis Development CEO Adam Lubkin of the newly renovated Buckeye Plaza, which he’s renamed The Shoppes of Buckeye. “When I do that, I’ve noticed that the area around it improves.”
“People were struggling, and now they’re struggling even more,” said Tamika Compton of her neighbors. Since their launch, the Community Yahoos have given out toys at Christmas, helped families avoid eviction or pay utility bills, and handed out masks and PPE.
The latest in a series of luxury, mixed-use developments along the border of Tremont and Ohio City is set to break ground sometime this year, bringing 171 residential units and new retail space to West 25th Street and Swift Avenue. Additionally, the developer will contribute $65,000 to a new Lincoln Heights Developer’s Fund to support the area.
For low-income older adults and those with disabilities, the challenges of staying healthy and avoiding isolation during the pandemic have been particularly hard. Many of the most vulnerable are now even more dependent on nonprofit, government and social service agencies to help them stay both mentally and physically healthy.
Hoping to educate candidates and voters in advance of the 2021 Cleveland mayoral and council elections, a coalition of more than a dozen groups have released a platform calling for environmental equity and more grassroots participation in decision making.
