Linda Howard makes it her life’s work to provide care to young moms when family and governmental and nonprofit assistance aren’t enough. She provides person-to-person help with material goods, low-cost rent, mental health care, and mentoring – and she’d do even more, if it weren’t for a decade-old conviction that bars her from participation in some efforts. 

Doan Brook Watershed Partnership works to protect the region’s ‘hidden’ natural landmark

Doan Brook, which runs from eastern Shaker Heights through Cleveland to Lake Erie, is an urban stream facing challenges of pollution and flooding from excess stormwater.  The nonprofit Doan Brook Watershed Partnership works to support the stream’s health and preservation and invite citizens to get to know and enjoy the waterway.

The debate over tax breaks for nonprofit Cleveland-area hospitals is also about racism and redlining

For years, hospitals and public policy wonks have been engaged in an ongoing debate over whether nonprofit hospitals provide adequate benefits to the community to make the tax breaks they receive a good deal for taxpayers. That debate is further complicated by the history of racist policies like redlining that still affect Clevelanders today.
