Could Black Lives Matter mural pave the way for more decorative street painting projects?

The Black Lives Matter mural on East 93rd Street in Cleveland’s Woodland Hills neighborhood has drawn thousands of people and played host to gospel choirs and prayer services since it was painted June 20th. Now, city leaders say they’ll keep the street closed until after July 4th to accommodate the wave of visitors they anticipate over the holiday weekend.

AsiaTown small businesses turn to community to survive

On May 12, staff at AsiaTown restaurant Emperor’s Palace spent hours preparing, boxing and sorting 100 free meals for neighborhood residents. The project was sponsored by the Medworks Unconditional Care COVID-19 Relief Fund, which purchases food and gift cards from local restaurants and grocery stores and distributes them to greater Cleveland community members in need.

Change doesn’t happen quickly at Cleveland’s West Side Market, where vendors and city officials have been wrangling for years about whether the city-run institution should be overseen by a dedicated nonprofit. Yet during the Covid-19 crisis, the city and vendors came together quickly to roll out curbside pickup, and now it may offer a model for moving forward as the market seeks to adjust to this new reality.
