What was once the nation’s largest maker of woolen horse blankets is now 60 affordable housing units and a hub for social services on Cleveland’s West Side.
The apartment complex first opened its doors in 1973. In 2008, it was permanently shut down and remained closed until Merritt and NREUV purchased it in 2023. By early 2024, the renovation project was underway.
The $12 million project will increase that visibility with improvements to its Gordon Square Theatre lobby, classroom, church and parish hall and the building’s exterior.
Sixty years ago, residents created the pioneering Nature Center at Shaker Lakes in response to a threat to the lakes. Now the lakes’ fate is being hotly debated again, and the center is quietly restoring its section of streams connecting them.
