Dennis Kucinich, once the youngest mayor ever of a big U.S. city, is bidding to become Cleveland’s oldest. “Time is an illusion to me,” the former mayor, state senator, and congressman said in a recent interview. “I don’t give it any thought at all.”
Northeast Ohio residents got the opportunity to question seven candidates for Cleveland mayor about their priorities on public safety, racial equity and more last week during a mayoral debate coordinated by Ideastream Public Media and the City Club of Cleveland.
Cuyahoga County held a grand opening for its new Diversion Center on a bright, chilly morning in early May. One by one, elected officials, judges and politicians stepped up to the podium to sing its praises. Outside the tent where the politicos were seated, leaders from Greater Cleveland Congregations, a faith-based group wearing bright yellow shirts, stood in the back and cheered.
On a recent sunlit summer afternoon, a groundbreaking ceremony in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood marked the place where new affordable housing for traumatized female veterans is slated to be completed in Spring 2022. The complex at Lee Rd. and E. 105th St. will accommodate everyone from individuals to women with up to two children.
ShotSpotter, now being tested in Cleveland, alerts police when it detects gunfire, and already has proven effective in deterring some potential instances of gun violence. Some hope that if applied more widely and deployed with complementary measures, it could improve safety.
Since 2019, there have been over 50 documented cases of hacking in Ohio spanning public safety, local government, medical facilities and schools. Examples include Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Ohio State Veterinary Center, City of Twinsburg, Westlake Police Department, and Aurora City Schools. Much of the hacking involves Ransomware and payment in Bitcoin, and most of it can be traced to Russia.
HB527 would have barred trans students in Ohio from competing as their true selves. The bill failed to advance forward in the Statehouse last year, but that original bill is not truly dead. In 2021, it rose like a zombie to become the “Save Women’s Sports Act,” which, if passed, would prevent trans female students from competing on female teams in Ohio’s schools and colleges.
Nearly a year after Columbus police officers pepper sprayed journalists covering protests against police brutality, The Columbus Division Police still have not named the officer shouting “I don’t care!” and turning eyes into agony, as those reporters shouted, “We are members of the news media!” and held up their badges.

Spurred by a grassroots, citizen-led petition that garnered more than 1,000 signatures, Cleveland City Council passed legislation at its November 18th meeting to remove the requirement for hired police at block parties.
