Kelly Margaret Heikkila is a thirty-something resident of the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. She is a proud Finnish-American and has recently been accepted to a Graduate Degree program in Theology at the University of Helsinki. She has two cats, Tynë and Tommy-Girl, and loves camping, social justice, and is a Harry Potter/LOTR/Marvel nerd. You can find her sipping coffee at Gypsy Beans, riding her bicycle to Edgewater Beach, and enjoying a good backyard cookout.

It’s a rainy Saturday morning in May as people file into the East Cleveland Public Library. What begins as a slow trickle – locals looking to devour the latest books, and students using the computer lab – turns into a large diverse group of young and old alike competing in a free local chess tournament.

The monument’s dedication kicks off a year of celebration for the Navy. October 13th, 2025 celebrates the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Navy by founding father George Washington himself, when he converted three Masschustes schooners into warships to intercept a British Naval Supply ship.
