Cycling, for Diana Hildebrand, isn’t about transportation. It’s about connections. When this southeast Cleveland resident hops on her hot-pink ride, she’s not necessarily looking to get from point A to point B. She’s looking to help others interact more deeply with the city and world around them, and enjoy a few of the many benefits she herself enjoys on a daily basis.
Haircare issues inspired Cleveland Heights native Camille Genise Heard to develop a virtual marketplace for independent beauty products, which in turn landed her a victory at a recent crowdfunding competition presented by Black Girl Ventures.
A former awning factory on Cleveland’s west side is about to start producing something altogether different: art. Out of an old industrial space with soaring high ceilings, the Cleveland Museum of Art has fashioned a new Community Arts Center, a vibrant place for residents of the Clark-Fulton neighborhood to gather, learn, create, and share.
Children need more than just food, clothing and shelter. They also need time in nature. For some in Northeast Ohio, though, that’s almost a luxury. Not only will the memorial now headed to Imperial Avenue honor and celebrate the women who lost their lives there. It will be a shining example to urban planners everywhere, a model of what to do with blighted space and helping a neighborhood move past trauma.
Jimmie Woody has a different vision for his dad’s old corner store and dairy business in Cleveland’s Lee-Harvard neighborhood — he sees it as a place that will lift up the neighborhood as his dad’s old shop once did, but where he and others also can ply their artistic trades.
Already a beacon in the fields of medicine, education, science, and the arts, the institutions of University Circle are now taking a leadership role in crowd control, modeling best practices for safe operation during a public health emergency.
