The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio (BGCNEO) will operate 30 sites this school year. Each site will offer free afterschool programming for kids 6 to 18.
That’s down slightly from last year, when the organization ran 33 Clubs across multiple counties. Three sites in Lorain County are being shuttered for this school year due to loss of 21st Century Community Learning Center Funds.
In mid-July, the 21st Century funding was temporarily frozen by the federal government. After public outcry and lobbying, the Trump administration released the monies, which included $1.8 million earmarked for BGCNEO. However, 21st Century funds are distributed through 5-year grants, and some of the Lorain County Clubs are at the end of their funding cycle, according to a BGCNEO spokesperson.
Instead, children at impacted Clubs will be moved to neighboring sites for the school year.
“Clubs are safe, fun places for kids and teens to go after school, with a focus on academic success, health and wellness, character and leadership and life and workforce readiness. Members receive a free daily meal and help from caring adult mentors. There is no charge to join,” BGCNEO said in a statement.
Fall programming starts Sept. 2 for nearly all Clubs (one site in Sandusky will open Sept. 8) and registration can be completed online.
