The Land celebrated an important milestone this month. We published our 100th article by a Community Journalist.
For those unfamiliar with our program, it’s a free, 12-week course that provides training and mentoring to aspiring journalists. Each participant receives direct, one-on-one support from a professional editor or reporter. At the conclusion of the program, participants publish an article on The Land and receive a $300 stipend for their work. Graduates are also invited to continue writing for The Land.
We believe the Community Journalism program is an urgent and unique program. Many Cleveland neighborhoods are underrepresented in media and our communities are disengaged. This program creates a platform for Clevelanders to tell authentic stories from their communities, and to report on issues that matter to them and their neighbors. We believe that no one knows Cleveland like Clevelanders. That’s why we train, pay and support our Community Journalists as they take action to inform and improve their city and neighborhoods.
“The community journalism program was a dream come true for me,” said Moses Ngong, one of the program’s graduates. “The opportunity to grow as a writer in community with other people who love Cleveland deepened my love for journalism and our city. It is what I wish journalism felt like across the industry!”
