The wider availability of Covid-19 vaccines in recent weeks has many Clevelanders weighing whether to get the shots. Cleveland Documenters interviewed more than 40 friends, family members, neighbors and residents from across the city over the past several weeks to understand their views, which in some cases were still evolving.
In early 2020, west side residents celebrated the completion of a new, long-awaited, $8 million streetscape on Fulton Road in Cleveland’s Ohio City and Clark-Fulton neighborhoods. Yet now, a year after the orange barrels were hauled away, the number of crashes have increased by 20% and some residents say that the road is less safe.
Now a third generation real estate brokerage, McMullan Realty continues to play a significant role in building up Black communities across Northeast Ohio, while also working to increase Black homeownership rates.
Nestled across the courtyard of the Hildebrandt Building, 3619 Walton Ave. is Svona Studio, a fine arts space set inside one of Cleveland’s most historic buildings. Shelly Svonavec’s Studio is bright and chic, but hidden behind strategically-placed curtains and around unsuspecting corners are glimpses into the Hildebrandt building’s past.
Community Housing Solutions helps to keep vulnerable Cuyahoga County residents safe by using federal, state and city dollars to make repairs to their homes, especially mechanical systems like furnaces and hot water tanks.
Neighbor Up, an offshoot of the Cleveland organization Neighborhood Connections, is working hard to increase equity and access to Covid-19 vaccine appointments. With the pause of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine distribution, Cleveland organizations are partnering and actively revising their initiative to continue serving Clevelanders.
Stand Up For Ohio, in partnership with Black Lives Matter Cleveland, NAACP Cleveland, Showing Up For Racial Justice-NEO and the ACLU of Ohio, launched a powerful new ballot campaign to ensure fair and independent investigations into police misconduct in Cleveland on Tuesday, April 20.
A Cleveland pastor from the city’s Glenville community spearheaded a local mission to bring water relief to the predominantly Black residents of Jackson, MS, whose water system was severely damaged by the same deadly storm that crippled the state of Texas.
Children need more than just food, clothing and shelter. They also need time in nature. For some in Northeast Ohio, though, that’s almost a luxury. They may have the basics of life but are missing or don’t feel welcome to take part in what others around the region routinely enjoy, and probably take for granted — abundant time outdoors.
