Having more Black patients in clinical trials and medical studies is critical to reducing health disparities. Black Cleveland doctors say adequate representation and hard work are needed.
When Carmen Bailey fell ill with COVID-19, she told her daughter not to take her to the hospital. Her story echoes that of many other Black Americans: she didn’t trust the medical system to treat her fairly.
“Morning, morning!” Regina Adams exclaimed to two guards about 7:20 a.m. while becoming about the 55th person in line outside the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. “It’s a wonderful morning to vote!”

Miles Hackney has lived in the Lee-Harvard neighborhood for more than 50 years. The brick and vinyl-sided colonial on the city’s east side was new when he bought it in 1968, and so was the neighborhood. Historically known as Cleveland’s “Black suburb in the city,” Lee-Harvard was a place of opportunity where Black people could afford to buy homes and raise their families in a good neighborhood.
On a recent Thursday evening in downtown Chagrin Falls, a Cleveland suburb named for a picturesque cascade in a nearby river, little was amiss: Diners in loafers and sundresses dropped off their BMWs and Alfa Romeos with valets before positioning themselves on patios at prudently spaced tables. Teens ranged around manicured parks taking selfies, while well-groomed women dipped in and out of The Artful Yarn, A Bit of Skirt, and other boho boutiques, cryo spas and vintage home goods stores.
It’s a hot Friday morning at 2100 Lakeside Avenue as director of operations David Blunt walks out into the yard of the homeless shelter for men in central Cleveland.
Kimberly Rodriguez is an accomplished veteran of Cleveland’s food scene. She has worked as a department manager at a grocery store, a personal chef for professional athletes, an event planner, and an instructor in restaurants, cafes and markets.
A grassroots collaborative is assembling and distributing 60,000 washable cloth masks along with voter and Census information to communities of color and LGBTQ+ people in Cleveland. Shanelle Smith Whigham, Ohio director of the Trust for Public Land, who helps lead the coalition, says she created the group because too many vulnerable people lack access to PPE.
