Many Northeast Ohio farmers’ markets not only stayed open last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also expanded access to Produce Perks, EBT and other nutrition assistance programs. Their aim is to help those in need while gaining customers at the same time.
Tenisha Gaines and Da’na Langford founded Village of Healing, a nonprofit pledged to improving birth outcomes for Black women, to provide a remedy for what they saw as ineffective and incomplete treatment during their careers as healthcare professionals. In fall of 2021, Village of Healing will open a women’s healthcare clinic for obstetric, gynecological, and infant care in Euclid.
Millions of Americans have already rolled up their sleeve for the COVID-19 vaccine. Now comes the next phase — reaching people who are hesitant or face barriers accessing it. Outreach workers have found that old-school outreach is key to boosting vaccine uptake.
The pandemic has made diagnosing lead poisoning and fixing hazards in homes even more difficult than it’s always been, as families are skipping pediatric appointments out of fear, and some lead inspectors and short-staffed health departments have had to delay or halt in-home work.
The wider availability of Covid-19 vaccines in recent weeks has many Clevelanders weighing whether to get the shots. Cleveland Documenters interviewed more than 40 friends, family members, neighbors and residents from across the city over the past several weeks to understand their views, which in some cases were still evolving.
Now a third generation real estate brokerage, McMullan Realty continues to play a significant role in building up Black communities across Northeast Ohio, while also working to increase Black homeownership rates.
Community Housing Solutions helps to keep vulnerable Cuyahoga County residents safe by using federal, state and city dollars to make repairs to their homes, especially mechanical systems like furnaces and hot water tanks.
Black churches in Cleveland have played host to regular vaccination sites since February, through an initiative started by the Greater Cleveland Congregations’ (GCC) interfaith coalition. They’re trying to address a serious problem: Vaccinations for Black residents in Cuyahoga County have consistently lagged behind vaccinations for white residents.
Since late January, the phone line, United Way of Greater Cleveland’s 211 HelpLink, in Cuyahoga County has taken more than 52,000 calls from area residents, helping the majority of those people register for COVID-19 vaccine appointments.
Over the past three years, infant mortality among Black children born in Cuyahoga County has improved. During the same time, an ecosystem of Black healthcare and social service providers has emerged. Pregnant with Possibilities is a Black-led, Black-serving organization applying cultural competence to solving the issue of racial healthcare disparities.
