Low-income families may find it difficult to send their kids to a costly summer camp, but one nonprofit organization located in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood is removing that barrier and connecting urban middle-schoolers with their community. University Circle Inc. (UCI) is expanding their free after-school program, Circle Scholars, to the Circle Explorers Summer Camp for 7th and 8th graders.
The free downtown event on Saturday, June 19 promises to not only shine a spotlight on Karamu House, the oldest Black theater in the country, but also to be a coming out party for Cleveland as pandemic restrictions are lifted and the city’s glorious summer gets into full swing.

Millions of Americans have already rolled up their sleeve for the COVID-19 vaccine. Now comes the next phase — reaching people who are hesitant or face barriers accessing it. Outreach workers have found that old-school outreach is key to boosting vaccine uptake.
Zygote Press, a nonprofit that offers a workspace for emerging and established printmakers and educational programs for the community, has launched a new paid residency for local Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists. The goal of the program, which is called BIPOC AIR (artist-in-residence), is to provide five artists from Northeast Ohio the opportunity to learn a variety of print techniques while engaging with a community of fellow artists.
According to MAGNET, a nonprofit organization that works to grow Northeast Ohio’s manufacturing economy, there are some 8,000 open manufacturing jobs in Northeast Ohio. Many of them are entry-level positions, but companies are having a hard time filling the, and COVID-19 is making it worse.
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) will be offering free summer learning experiences for students in preschool through 12th grade. According to the CMSD website, these summer learning experiences offer students the opportunity to “finish, enrich and engage” in learning.
