The Land is offering another opportunity for aspiring community journalists. We are recruiting now for the sixth cohort of writers. Since The Land launched this program that attracts, trains, and mentors residents as journalists, we have witnessed positive reactions from across the community. Readers, community leaders, and funders appreciate the home-grown news model and have been supportive of our efforts.
In April of this year, The Land celebrated reaching a milestone mark of having 50 graduates of its community journalism program. And in late June, The Land published its 50th article from a community journalist. On a weekly basis, we now anticipate having completed articles from these freelance community journalists and plan to consistently fold them in to our editorial schedule.
The fifth cohort is currently underway, and we are proud to announce the dates for our sixth cohort of community journalists. Beginning on Oct. 2 and lasting through Nov. 6, this cohort will meet on Mondays from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. This is followed by six weeks (November-December) where the community journalists meet and work with their mentors to complete an article.
The Land’s community journalism program is a free, 12-week training and mentoring program that begins with a series of training sessions, includes support from a professional editor, and concludes with a community journalist’s published article in The Land along with a $300 stipend for doing the work.
