Northeast Ohio will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 20. We’ve compiled a list of upcoming events around the community. Most of the below are free to attend, though some may ask for registration.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s MLK Celebration – From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 20, the Rock Hall will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Guests will enjoy free admission to all activities and performances, including access to the “I Have a Dream” wall, Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream Speech” screening on loop in the Forest City Theatre, Don Cornelius’ “Soul Train” playing all day in Foster Theater, protest sign making, a specially curated Artifact Spotlight, and performances on the Indoor PNC Stage featuring Rainey Dance, The Fleshman Singers, and Esther Fitz.
Greater Cleveland Congregations will host, “Where do we go from here: Chaos or community?” – The Jan. 20th event will take place at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, 8712 Quincy Ave., Cleveland. The intergenerational event runs from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be activities for elementary-aged children, pre-teens and teenagers. RSVP’s are encouraged and can be completed here.
Cleveland Orchestra’s MLK Day of Music – On Jan. 20, guests can enjoy a day of free community performances and activities, including a wide variety of ensembles live from Severance’s Mandel Concert Hall and Reinberger Chamber Hall. A full list of performing artists and interactive exhibits can be found on the Orchestra’s website.
Cleveland Museum of Art’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration – The renowned Cleveland museum will open its doors on Jan. 20 for a free daylong celebration. Guests can explore passages from King’s writing and speeches, create a work of art inspired by his legacy and explore the blockbuster exhibit, “Picasso and Paper” for free. Visitors will be admitted, for free, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration – The CMNH will open its doors to the community on Jan. 20. All guests will get free admission and can explore Dr. King’s legacy, and his connection to science, community and Cleveland. Events and activities include opportunities to explore posters featuring Dr. King’s quotes and historical photographs from his visits to Cleveland, special MLK-themed buttons, free hot chocolate, participate in community art projects and more.
Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration – On Jan. 20, guests will receive free admission to the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Attendees can explore the glasshouses and the Perennial Playspace, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be a tree cookie activity table from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., make a craft to take home, participate in a community art project and learn how to get more benefits from plants and trees.
