About 5,000 of the city’s more than 150,000 waste division customers have opted into the city’s new recycling program so far, most of them on the west side, according to information provided by Sustainable Cleveland at a community meeting on Wed. Aug. 25. In the coming weeks, the city says it’s planning a big marketing push to increase signups before the Oct. 31 deadline.
Five nonprofit groups whose work focuses on improving parks have formed the Cleveland Parks and Greenspace Coalition to push for equitable access to green space, transparency in how investments are made, and residents taking “ownership” over parks in the city. Cleveland has fallen behind its peer cities in providing equitable parks for all, they say, and the time is right to dismantle structures that perpetuate racism.
A proposed park in the city’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood got a big boost this month from the National Park Service, which awarded $661,724 to the city of Cleveland to help develop the project.
The West Side Market’s new day stall vendor program grants local entrepreneurs temporary spots in the produce arcade on weekends. Although this program only runs from Aug. 7 to Aug. 28, the city has eyes on a future long-term day stall program.
Dennis Kucinich, once the youngest mayor ever of a big U.S. city, is bidding to become Cleveland’s oldest. “Time is an illusion to me,” the former mayor, state senator, and congressman said in a recent interview. “I don’t give it any thought at all.”
Northeast Ohio residents got the opportunity to question seven candidates for Cleveland mayor about their priorities on public safety, racial equity and more last week during a mayoral debate coordinated by Ideastream Public Media and the City Club of Cleveland.
A newly-inked pilot program will soon bring electric scooters to four east side communities, Euclid, South Euclid, East Cleveland and Cleveland Heights. Cuyahoga County sustainability director Mike Foley said scooters are set to hit the streets in these areas in September, with a possible launch Labor Day weekend.
Developers hope the intersection of West 150th Street and Lorain Avenue in West Park will soon be the home of five new national chain retail locations and a new name. The project received final approval from the Cleveland Planning Commission on May 7, but has yet to name new tenants.
There were more than 8,000 open manufacturing jobs in Northeast Ohio last year, according to the nonprofit organization MAGNET. One of the more intractable problems facing manufacturers is the mismatch between the location of jobs and where entry-level workers live. Many low-income and Black workers live in Cleveland and don’t own cars, but many jobs are in the suburbs, far from public transportation. The church van program aims to bridge that gap.
The nonprofit organization Organic Connects provides programs ranging from field trips that teach kids how to fish to environmental internships for urban youth. In addition to helping city kids connect with the outdoors in Cleveland, the group also helps to train young people for future environmental careers.
