Much like the proverbial middle child, Cleveland’s so-called middle neighborhoods, or communities like Old Brooklyn, Bellaire Puritas and Lee-Harvard that are on the edge of stability and decline, are often forgotten yet full of potential. Yet today, Village Capital Corporation announced that it has received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Treasury that it plans to dedicate towards lending in middle neighborhoods.
ShotSpotter, now being tested in Cleveland, alerts police when it detects gunfire, and already has proven effective in deterring some potential instances of gun violence. Some hope that if applied more widely and deployed with complementary measures, it could improve safety.
Since 2019, there have been over 50 documented cases of hacking in Ohio spanning public safety, local government, medical facilities and schools. Examples include Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Ohio State Veterinary Center, City of Twinsburg, Westlake Police Department, and Aurora City Schools. Much of the hacking involves Ransomware and payment in Bitcoin, and most of it can be traced to Russia.
Many people who need to hire a tree service never think about it where the lumber goes after it’s been hauled off their property. But for Seth Harrison, owner of Nature’s Beauty Tree Service and A Piece of Cleveland, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. For years, Harrison has been crafting coffee tables, shelves and other furniture items using trees harvested from all over Northeast Ohio.
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is offering free rides for all buses, rails, and Park-N-Rides from June 13-19. These free services were implemented to encourage existing and new riders to try the newly redesigned system, called NEXT GEN RTA.

While overall COVID-19 vaccination rates for Asian-Americans are relatively high in Ohio, Asian-American and Pacifc Island (AAPI) refugees and immigrants in Northeast Ohio – many who don’t speak English – have had to negotiate unique cultural and language barriers on their road to getting vaccinated.

Now, longtime owners Cindy Barber and Mark Leddy are hoping to use federal relief funding to stabilize their business and begin to realize their newly-congealing dream of creating an arts campus on Waterloo Road in North Collinwood.
