Entrepreneurial fire goads Vivien Phoenix to rise as owner of mobile Bossy Bakery Boutique

So delighted was Vivien Phoenix’s mother with the cupcake tower she made on Mother’s Day 2013, she decided then and there to go into business. Thus was born Bossy Bakery Boutique, Cleveland’s first Black- and female-owned mobile bakery. Five years later, Phoenix and her hot-pink bakery truck are going strong, enjoying a lively trade at local festivals, farmer’s markets, and private events.

Church van program gives workers a lift out of poverty

There were more than 8,000 open manufacturing jobs in Northeast Ohio last year, according to the nonprofit organization MAGNET. One of the more intractable problems facing manufacturers is the mismatch between the location of jobs and where entry-level workers live. Many low-income and Black workers live in Cleveland and don’t own cars, but many jobs are in the suburbs, far from public transportation. The church van program aims to bridge that gap.

Lime ebikes just rolled into Cleveland

As the saying goes, it’ll be just like riding a bike — only this time, with motorized pedal assist. That’s what Lime, a provider of shared electric vehicles, is hoping Clevelanders will say about its e-bikes, which it brought to Cleveland over the Fourth of July weekend.

Artist Shani Richards is part of a movement to revitalize the Sidaway Bridge. With her work in “Crossroads: Still We Rise,” a new exhibition at The Sculpture Center in Cleveland, she hopes to draw new attention to the structure. “Crossroads,” the first in a series of related exhibitions, features 11 other artists, each of whom also hopes to unveil a forgotten corner of Cleveland and push for its revival.
