5 years after Ohio’s $60M bribery scandal, critics say more could be done to prevent a repeat

It has been five years since a $60 million bribery scheme funded by FirstEnergy Corp. came to light in Ohio with the stunning arrests ofa powerful Republican state lawmaker and four associates in July 2020. Expert observers say the resulting prosecutions, lawsuits, penalties and legislation that have piled up since then haven’t led to enough change and accountability to prevent politicians and corporate executives from cutting similar deals in the future.

New law seeks to honor Tanisha Anderson’s legacy while making police accountable for mental health scenarios

Relatives of Tanisha Anderson partnered with Cleveland City Council members and Case Western Reserve University students to author a new piece of legislation. As proposed, “Tanisha’s Law” would revise training regimens for mental health crises via a new Department of Community Crisis Response. This new team would try to prevent incidents like Anderson’s November 2014 death, which occurred after Cleveland Division of Police officers detained her while responding to a mental health emergency at her East Side home.
