The gale force entry of former state senator Nina Turner into the developing race to succeed Cleveland area Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, pending her confirmation as the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, knocked our plans for this column momentarily askew.
Cleveland will squander a perfect crisis, as the saying goes, if it puts all the pieces back in the same pre-pandemic order, former New York City Transportation Commissioner, Janette Sadik-Kahn told a Zoom audience at the University Circle, Inc. annual meeting.
Cleveland city council just passed an ordinance allowing outdoor dining and drinking in parking lots, streets and rights-of-way. Lakewood made a similar move a couple weeks ago and other cities are considering it. Increasingly, expanding outdoor space is being seen as a possible solution for reopening safely during Covid-19.
At the June 2nd meeting of Cleveland City Council’s Development, Planning and Sustainability meeting, president Kevin Kelley pressed chief operating officer Darnell Brown on Cleveland’s recycling hiatus: “We talked about keeping people in practice; let’s keep them in practice doing something that actually works. Do something smart that keeps the confidence of the citizens.”
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson released details of the city’s ReStart CLE plan last week and held a telephone town hall meeting to answer questions. The city’s Department of Public Health is working on public health education, direct prevention support to at-risk populations, and expanded community outreach. The city is also offering assistance and support to businesses that have closed or are at risk of closing.
