Juneteenth commemorates the day the last slaves in the United States were freed. It’s a day to celebrate freedom in the Black community, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Here are upcoming events commemorating Juneteenth in The Land:
- MetroHealth Juneteenth Freedom Fest (June 15) – This city-wide, family-friendly celebration will be held on Mall C in downtown Cleveland on June 15 and runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Attendees can expect live music, food trucks, activities for the whole family, and more!
- 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration (June 15) – All are welcome at the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration presented by Ursuline College and the City of Pepper Pike on the grounds of Ursuline College on Saturday, June 15, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Juneteenth Celebration at the Catholic Diocese (June 19) – Hosted by St. Agatha-St. Aloysius Paris, 10932 St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland. Mass at 11 a.m., followed by food and fellowship.
- Beachwood Juneteenth Celebration (June 19) – All are welcome at Beachwood’s Juneteenth Community Celebration in partnership with the Beachwood City School’s African American Affinity Group. Enjoy family activities, a balloon artist, DJ, vendors, food trucks and more.
- Culture, Community & Liberation: A Juneteenth Celebration (June 22) – A one-day arts festival celebrating Black history, freedom, and togetherness with poetry, music, and more, featuring Cleveland playwright Dr. Mary E. Weems, Heights Poet Laureate Siaara Freeman, hip hop group Muamin Collective, singer CHIMI, and more!
In addition to these events, the Cleveland History Center’s African American Art History Walk is open all day, every day. The Walk is located along E. 108th St., between East Boulevard and Magnolia Drive. The mural may be of particular interest during African American Music Appreciation Month and the Juneteenth Freedom Celebration.
