Cuyahoga County officials say they’re committed to reducing health disparities through through economic development, but some local racial equity experts and community stakeholders question whether the county’s initiatives are having a real impact.
Cleveland has just a year left to roll out its new lead-safe requirements. Nearly 9,200 rental units out of an estimated 100,000 in the city have been lead-safe certified so far.
After declaring racism a public health crisis a year ago, the county ADAMHS board replaced the word “racism” with “discrimination.” The board chair said this was because “there’s only one race – the human race.” Now they’ve voted to re-add the word racism, scrapping the amended resolution altogether.
Municipalities across Northeast Ohio declared racism a public health crisis nearly two years ago. The Land, in partnership with Ideastream Public Media will catalog what they’ve accomplished since.
When the nonprofits Assembly for the Arts and CAN Journal asked mayoral candidates in the primary if they would champion the arts at city hall, the response was unanimous: let’s do this thing. Now, the groups are pushing to make the arts a top issue in the Nov. 2 general election and hold the next mayor accountable for putting plans into action.
With Cleveland’s general elections approaching fast, organizations across the city have steadily announced mayoral forums probing candidates Kevin Kelley and Justin Bibb on a litany of Cleveland issues. In response to the flurry of these forums and other election-related events, The Land will regularly compile and update a list of events as we hear of them.
Dennis Kucinich, once the youngest mayor ever of a big U.S. city, is bidding to become Cleveland’s oldest. “Time is an illusion to me,” the former mayor, state senator, and congressman said in a recent interview. “I don’t give it any thought at all.”
Northeast Ohio residents got the opportunity to question seven candidates for Cleveland mayor about their priorities on public safety, racial equity and more last week during a mayoral debate coordinated by Ideastream Public Media and the City Club of Cleveland.
When I was six or seven years old, I thought the most prestigious university in the world was WSMU. At every family gathering, my uncle would invariably invoke the lessons learned at WSMU to settle any argument. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I learned WSMU was not a college at all, but instead my uncle’s euphemistic reference to the hard-scrabble education one gains by working for decades at the West Side Market.
After a year-and-a-half long hiatus, curbside recycling is coming back to the city of Cleveland. Clevelanders have until Oct. 22 to opt-in to the new service through an online form or by calling 216-664-3030. Because the program is optional, those who don’t sign up will have their blue bins removed by the Division of Waste Collection.
