One of the most anticipated films of the fall hits area screens! Here is your #movienerdreport!
There’s a lot going on as October gets underway but before September comes to a close there is a film to check out this Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Rd, Cleveland Heights 44118) titled “Edie Arnold is a Loser.” The film’s website describes it as the story of a timid dork named Edie who accidentally takes the spotlight when she starts a punk band with her fellow “turds” and becomes an icon to the underdogs at her all-girls Catholic school. This film is taking a grass roots approach by setting up screenings and the filmmakers will be there in person for a Q&A! It will also play on Thursday at the Apollo Theatre in Oberlin (19 E College St, Oberlin 44074)!

Thursday through Saturday will be the She Creates Shorts Festival & Expo. This new event is being presented by Women In Film and Television Ohio and will be highlighting short films that were created by women and also allows the chance to network. Events will be held at the Midtown Collaboration Center, The Beck Center of the Arts, The Cleveland Cinematheque and The Capitol Theatre!

Saturday at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre (1511 Euclid Ave, Cleveland 44115) will be the opportunity to see the Jonathan Demme/Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense.” Often cited as one of the best concert films of all time, not only do you get to see the film but the screening is hosted by former Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison.

Opening widely this weekend is easily one of the most talked about films of the year, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Digger.” The film stars Tom Cruise (heavily in makeup) and it is about the most powerful man in the world who embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he’s humanity’s savior. The film also stars John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons and Sandra Hüller.
Also opening widely is “Verity,” which is a film adapted from a Colleen Hoover novel that is about a struggling writer who uncovers dark, horrifying secrets while finishing a famous author’s book series. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett star.
The other film opening widely is “Beware Boiúna” which is about a team of young medical missionaries in the Amazon rainforest who accidentally awaken a colossal, ancient serpent. Jessica Rothe (“Happy Death Day”) stars.
Over at the Cleveland Cinematheque (11610 Euclid Ave, Cleveland 44106):
Thursday at 7 p.m. they will be presenting “Shed Projects presents Short Cuts.” This is a collection of short films celebrating experimental, artist-made film and video works five minutes and under. This year’s program features a diverse selection of regional, national and international artists. This program will also play at the Capitol Theatre (1390 W.65th Street, Cleveland 44102) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Thursday at 8:50 p.m. their cult musical series will continue with a true oddity called “Voyage of the Rock Aliens.” It is about a group of new-wave extraterrestrials who travel through space in a guitar-shaped spaceship to find the true source of rock ‘n’ roll. Pia Zadora and Craig Sheffer star.
Friday at 6:45 p.m. they will show a documentary titled “The Last Sacrifice.” The film delves into the real-life 1945 witchcraft killing of Charles Walton – the terrifying event which inspired “The Wicker Man.”
Friday at 8:50 p.m. and Saturday at 7:10 p.m. they will present William Friedkin’s “Cruising.” It stars Al Pacino as an undercover police officer who tries to catch a serial killer targeting gay men in New York City.
Saturday at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and Sunday at 7:35 p.m. they will show the highly-acclaimed feature length documentary debut of John Wilson (“How to with John Wilson”), “The History of Concrete.” In the film, Wilson applies lessons from a Hallmark movie writing workshop to pitch a documentary about concrete. This film will also be playing at The Nightlight Cinema.
Sunday at 3 p.m. the Cinematheque continues their Sundays with Shearer series with her 1930 film “The Divorcee” from a 35mm print!
At 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, they will show “Coupe 53” which is a documentary about the 1953 Anglo-American covert operation that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.

Over at The Nightlight Cinema (30 N High Street, Akron 44308):
They will be opening the comedy “The Incomer” which is about two isolated siblings on a remote Scottish island whose lives are upended when a clumsy government worker arrives to evict them. It stars Domhnall Gleeson (“The Paper”).
Sunday at 4:30 p.m. they will present the documentary “What Will I Become?” The documentary explores the crisis of transmasculine suicide and the realities of trans boyhood.
Monday at 6 p.m. they will present a documentary that premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival called “Joybubbles.” It chronicles the life of Joe Engressia, a blind man with perfect pitch who became a pioneer of the “phone phreaking” subculture – an early precursor to modern computer hacking.

Over at Case Western Reserve Film Society (located at Strosacker Auditorium on the Case campus):
On Friday at 7 p.m., 9:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. they will present Curry Barker’s hit “Obsession.”
Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. they will show “Mean Girls” from a 35mm print! Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey (who wrote the script) star.
On Sunday from 2 p.m.– 5p.m. they will present “2026 Wild & Scenic Film Festival.” It is a film festival by activists for activists. This will feature 10 short films in a wide range of styles that each deliver an important message about the environment.

For the month of October, The Canton Palace Theatre (605 Market Ave N, Canton 44702) will be showing a number of horror films. This Friday at 7:30 p.m. they will have a 40th anniversary screening of David Cronenberg’s “The Fly,” which stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.
Saturday at 7 p.m. they will present a special screening of “The Blair Witch Project.” The cult film will be presented with a Q&A with the cast members in person and there will also be meet and greet opportunities afterward.
