Benedictine High School is preparing for the construction of a new atrium as part of a larger $4.5 million centennial campaign to update the campus. In addition to the atrium, BHS plans on increasing green spaces, remodeling science labs, and a new roof for the St. Andrew Abbey.
The 80,000-square-foot "Pivot Center for Art::Dance::Expression" unites arts and social services, including a program led by a victim of a notorious kidnapping nearby. Gina DeJesus helps families like hers on the same square block where she was held captive for nine years.
At Euclid High School, students needed this safe space and made it happen on Saturdays to avoid bullying and stigma. Now, the group boasts active participation from around 20 students each meeting (now held every other Friday after school). Though their club may have been “officially” cut, these students persist.
Not all high school graduates want to go to a college or university. So, what’s left for them? A low-wage job? Fast food? Unfortunately, that’s what many young Clevelanders see as their only choice. But, the ACE Mentor Program of Cleveland wants them to know there are viable career options.
There are more than 8,000 open manufacturing jobs across the region, according to MAGNET. The ACCESS to Manufacturing Careers program is a workforce readiness initiative that gives returning citizens a second chance, helping them find good-paying jobs in the manufacturing sector.
Several Cleveland School of the Arts students in the Cleveland Orchestra's Music Mentors program have branched out as teachers themselves, using what they've learned to train younger players at Cleveland's Mound STEM School.
Refugee Response, a nonprofit organization that empowers refugees resettled in Northeast Ohio to thrive in their new home, and Facing History and Ourselves, a group that uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and students to stand up to bigotry and hate, are relocating to the Urban Community School campus.
As Cleveland schools continue with remote learning, the district has experienced a pandemic exodus—2,252 students left between October 2019 and October 2020. Some parents are transferring their children to private Catholic schools for a strictly in-person education, despite the pandemic risks.
In just over a month, Cleveland Metro School kids will pass a concerning milestone: a year since the schools shut down. A year of learning 100% online. Will Cleveland schools be the last in the state to reopen? Is online learning working? Does anyone even care?
