The Land is looking for its first managing editor to join a lean leadership team. Working with urgency to meet The Land’s growing demand for quality news, the managing editor will help take The Land’s community-powered journalism to the next level.

 


 

The Land is a nonprofit news organization that reports on Cleveland’s neighborhoods. Through in-depth solutions journalism, we deliver stories that foster accountability, inform the community, and inspire people to take action. 

The Land is looking for its first managing editor to join a lean leadership team. Working with urgency to meet The Land’s growing demand for quality news, the managing editor will help take The Land’s community-powered journalism to the next level. Primarily working remotely, this is an excellent opportunity for the right person to advance their career within a dynamic digital media organization.

This is an opportunity to help grow a community news organization that provides in-depth reporting for and with neighborhood residents. You’ll work not only with The Land, but also collaboratively with other news organizations, including the Northeast Ohio Solutions Journalism Collaborative (NEOSOJO) and several new nonprofit newsrooms. 

Position: The Land Managing Editor

Status: Part-time or full-time depending on candidate needs 

Reports to: Executive Director

Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus paid leave, healthcare allowance, retirement contribution

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Newsroom editing experience

  • Knowledge of Cleveland and the community development, economic development, and local government beats

  • Experience working with freelance and community journalists 

Responsibilities include: 

Assigning and editing stories

  • Assign/edit 2-5+ stories per week to staff writers, freelancers, and community journalists 

  • Work with to develop stable roster of freelance writers

  • Work with manager of community journalism program to shepherd stories to completion

  • Maintain an overall editorial calendar with deadlines 

  • Ensure broad mix of content that serves our editorial goals and objectives as well as our commitments to funders and underwriters 

Publishing and promoting content

  • Distribute email newsletter 2-3x or more per week

  • Oversee social media postings

  • Promote and track republishing of stories 

  • Promote and track media mentions

  • Engage in editorial partnerships with Northeast Ohio Solutions Journalism Collaborative (NEOSOJO) and other newsrooms

  • Seek continuous learning and improvement in publishing process

Impact tracking

  • Promote our impact survey to writers and sources

  • Report on results

  • Compile impact case studies as needed

Editing/Reporting

  • Work with freelance journalists to edit stories for maximum impact

  • Assist community journalists with completing stories 

  • Cover occasional short news stories as needed

  • Compile best-of coverage and other aggregated stories

  • Write blog posts and other materials sharing impact

Events

  • Working with others on staff to help organize Tour The Land and Reader Roundtable events aimed at reader engagement in issues we cover

A successful candidate will be a resourceful, up-and-coming editor interested in working with and learning from our small but growing team. Competitive candidates should have a passion for accountability, investigative journalism and solutions journalism, as well as working with residents to source story ideas and foster civic engagement. L

We are looking for:

— An experienced reporter/editor who has demonstrated skill in in-depth storytelling

— Someone who wants to dig into underreported issues and communities in Cleveland

–A journalist who truly gets excited about all the possible tools we can use for journalism now, from engaging with readers to analyzing data

–Someone who is enthusiastic about working with diverse groups of people, including Cleveland’s Latinx community and Black-led community organizations

–A collaborator; someone who works well as part of a team. In some cases, our efforts involve two or more journalists working together to bring a story home.

–A self-starter who will develop a strong network of sources to find and pursue stories that will reach a broad audience
