To many, the most anticipated film of the year is here! Here is your #movienerdreport
In his first film since sweeping the Oscars for “Oppenheimer,” the new Christopher Nolan film is finally here and it is his adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey!” It features an all-star cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and so many more. It is the first film of its kind to be fully shot exclusively on IMAX cameras. We now have in our area a few theaters that will show it in that format, there are also two theaters that will play it on 70mm film, the Phoenix Theater Great Northern and Cinemark Valley View. As of this writing, reviews are glowing for the film and I got to see it early and I thought it was an impressive feat of filmmaking!
With “The Odyssey” set to take over many screens, there are not any other wide releases but one film does open at the Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Rd, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118) and The Nightlight Cinema (30 N High Street Akron, OH 44308). It’s a film that has created a considerable amount of buzz and it is called “Maddie’s Secret.” The film was written, directed and stars John Early, best known for his work on the show “Search Party.” The film is about a food influencer that secretly suffers from bulimia as she navigates online fame, close friendships and a painful past.
Also at the Cedar Lee they will be continuing their I Love The 90’s series with screenings of Paul Verhoeven’s Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi classic in “Total Recall.” It will play Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m., and next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Sunday at 4 p.m. they will also be playing the documentary “Mary Oliver: Saved By The Beauty Of The World.”. It is about the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, who is an Ohio native!
Over at the Cleveland Cinematheque ((11610 Euclid Ave Cleveland, OH 44106):
On Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Friday at 9:05 p.m. they will present a 4K restoration of the Japanese film “Love Letter.” It tells the story of a widow who writes a letter to her deceased lover’s address, and to her surprise, she receives a reply.
Thursday at 8:50 p.m. they will continue the Dario Argento series with his 1982 film. “Tenebre,” in a new 4K restoration,
Friday at 6:45 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. will bring the Spanish language film “Romeía.” It tells the story of a young woman whose search for documents for college leads her to her biological family on the Atlantic Coast.
Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. they will present a 4K restoration of 1944’s “Phantom Lady” which tells the story of a secretary who embarks on a dangerous mission to find the elusive woman who may prove her boss didn’t murder his wife.
Sunday at 3:30 brings a 4K restoration of an Arabic film “Beirut Phantom.”
Sunday at 5:45 p.m. brings Alex Cox’s western “Walker.” The film stars Ed Harris who portrays a 19th century American mercenary leader who became the president of Nicaragua. It will play from a 35mm print!
Sunday at 7:40 p.m. the Andrzej Wajda series continues with his 1975 film “The Promised Land.”

Also the Nightlight Cinema on Sunday at 5 p.m. they will present an outstanding documentary that played the Cleveland International Film Festival earlier this year in “Remaining Native.” It tells the story of a young man who struggles to navigate his dream of becoming a collegiate cross country runner.
