24th Waterloo Arts Fest comes back to Collinwood Sept. 12

The Waterloo Arts Fest returns to Cleveland’s Collinwood neighborhood on Sept. 12, aiming to channel the momentum of February’s Brite Winter Festival, which drew large crowds and renewed enthusiasm for community-driven arts events.

The fall festival, now in its 24th year, will again transform the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District — along Waterloo Road from Calcutta Avenue to East 161st Street — into a seven-hour outdoor arts corridor and celebration of local creativity, featuring more than 90 maker booths, at least 10 open galleries, and 40-plus bands across eight stages.

The festival features primarily indie and emerging artists from Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. Its lineup spans rock, jazz, funk, hip-hop, folk and experimental music, with indoor and outdoor stages, including the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern and the Treelawn Social Club and Music Hall.

“We focus on local acts — that’s what this festival is all about,” said Cindy Barber, co-owner of the Beachland and founder of the nonprofit Cleveland Rocks: Past, Present and Future. “And there are more stages this year than ever.”

Bands of note include two funk-soul-rock bands that are slated for the Beachland: Collin Miller & The Brother Nature, a polished act headlining the Beachland at 5 p.m. (Miller is also a Beachland bartender); and Fox Ears at 2:30 p.m.

The Lookout Service, a high-energy, Toronto-based indie and alt-rock band, is scheduled for the Tucker Ellis Stage at 6:20 p.m.

The full schedule of bands and stages can be seen by clicking here. The Cleveland Rocks Shop (Cleveland Rock PPF’s retail store at 15801 Waterloo) will be selling music and merch for the festival’s performing and local artists, in addition to hosting one of the eight music stages.

Beyond music, the festival will highlight hands-on artmaking, circus performances, bookbinding workshops, roaming performers, children’s play spaces and community projects such as the Remember Love Recovery Project and a new collaborative clay installation.

With its pay-what-you-can ticketing model and emphasis on accessibility, organizers hope the September event will build on that past 24 years along with the energy of Brite Winter’s 2026 success to draw Clevelanders back outdoors as summer winds down.

Two decades

The festival’s setting is part of its story. In 2002, Waterloo Road was a very different place, with vacant storefronts outnumbering businesses. Artists and residents saw something else in the aging commercial strip — inexpensive spaces for studios and galleries, a neighborhood with deep immigrant roots, the nearby lakefront and a fledgling music venue in the Beachland Ballroom. Waterloo Arts was born, helping turn the once-struggling corridor into one of Cleveland’s most distinctive scenes.

What began as an experiment in neighborhood revitalization has also become an economic-development story. Waterloo Arts says the district now has 15 arts-related businesses and more than $6 million in direct investment, evidence of the founders’ original belief that galleries, studios, music and public art could do more than beautify a neighborhood — they could help sustain it.

Waterloo’s arts identity sits atop an older Collinwood tradition of immigrant and neighborhood institutions. The area grew around the railroad yards and became home to generations of European immigrants, whose presence is still visible in places such as the Slovenian Workmen’s Home (now the Treelawn) and the former Croatian Liberty Home (now the Beachland).
