Charlotte Pressler

Born in Lakewood, Charlotte Pressler has lived and traveled to many places but still considers Northeast Ohio home ground. A graduate of Cleveland State University, she participated in the 1970s Cleveland punk scene and the early 1980s Downtown New York music scene. Her memoir Those Were Different Times is frequently cited by writers about those eras. In the late 1980s she was a founding member of Progressive Urban Real Estate, living in Tremont, programming and grantwriting for the CSU Poetry Center and the Poets’ League of Greater Cleveland (now Literary Cleveland). In the early 1990s she began graduate studies in poetics and literature at University at Buffalo. After her Ph.D was conferred, she taught English and philosophy at South Florida State College, where she also directed the honors and service-learning programs, and chaired a local historic preservation commission. She retired in 2020 and returned to Lakewood. Her journalistic interests include educational policy, historic architecture, and the built environment.

Learning to read by reading is out; phonics-heavy direct instruction is in. But Lakewood schools hadn’t waited for the state mandate to begin making changes. They were already starting to align their teaching methods with the Science of Reading before the state law went into effect in 2024. Two years later, what are the results?
