The Land receives funding from Press Forward as part of its Open Call to Close Local Coverage Gaps

More than 900 news organizations from around the nation applied to receive this funding. The Land is part of the first cohort of 205 news organizations, a bright mosaic of independent, nonpartisan sources that reimagine what local news looks like.

The Land is proud and honored to announce that it is one of the initial recipients of funding from Press Forward.

Press Forward is a national movement to strengthen communities by revitalizing local news and information. A coalition of funders is investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news and scale infrastructure the sector needs to thrive.

Since 2020, The Land has been on the frontlines of providing true local news for Clevelanders and Greater Clevelanders. We’ve been training Northeast Ohioans to report on their neighborhoods and creating a better understanding of the importance of local journalism.

A review panel of national foundation and journalism leaders read about how our stories make a difference right here at home and awarded The Land $100,000 in funding.

“This is a transformative moment for The Land,” said Executive Director Chris Mosby. “We’re thrilled to be chosen by Press Forward and eager to use this support to enhance and expand our programming and reporting.”

Grant recipients are located in all 50 states. Our peers include newer nonprofits – some launched as information needs became evident during the pandemic – and enduring for-profits continuing to adapt and innovate after a century in business. Some newsrooms are reporting on the vast American countryside – where they are often the only news source for hundreds of miles – while other outlets are covering people of color and linguistically diverse communities that traditional news sources have overlooked. Each produces the everyday stories people need to make decisions about their daily lives.

While this grant is wonderful news, we need local support to sustain this work for the long term — for all of us. Will you help us celebrate this moment and prepare for what’s ahead by making a gift to The Land today
