How job creation efforts are impacting your neighborhoods
I’m Mandy, an economic development journalist with The Land. I investigate how efforts to create jobs and build wealth in Cleveland are impacting communities that face systemic barriers.
Economic development is a broad topic, but we are selective about the stories we tell. Instead of just reporting on problems, The Land also reports on how community members, leaders, and organizations are responding to problems in the community — and where these efforts are succeeding and falling short. We follow up to see whether efforts made an impact on Clevelanders’ lives.
Right now, I’m working on a story about efforts to advance equity in Cleveland’s tech entrepreneurship ecosystem. I’m also working on some stories about the barriers that workers face, including transportation barriers that people who rely on public transit face getting to jobs, job training, and literacy tutoring.
We need your help to continue reporting on how Cleveland’s economic landscape is changing. Reader support is crucial so we can devote the time and resources necessary to conduct research and interviews, write, and fact-check each story.

In October, I wrote about CentroVilla25, an upcoming Latino marketplace in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood that will be home to 20 micro-retailers, a commercial kitchen, and a grocery store that will offer fresh, culturally significant produce and infrastructure to support entrepreneurs.
Stories like this can plant seeds of hope, and they’re often a welcome change from many news stories that only focus on problems, provide dismal statistics, and lack the perspectives of real people. That’s what sets us apart from other local outlets.
If you become a monthly member today, we will be able to bring you even more informative economic development stories, focused on the neighborhoods that other local outlets don’t report on. Will you support The Land?
