Hello dear readers, this is another jampacked week of offerings for you movie lovers out there, here is your #movienerdreport!
Tonight, at the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd, Cleveland Heights 44106) is the latest edition of “Lenora’s Midnight Rental Secret Screening.” If you have never attended before, it is a fun event in which late night host Lenora plays a horror film from her vast collection and the audience gets to laugh along the way. Tonight’s co-host is filmmaker/musician Kacie Marie who will be unveiling her latest short film “Rapture In Blue.” Doors open at 7 p.m., “Rapture In Blue” plays at 7:30 p.m., and the rest of the show starts at 8 p.m.

One of the films I’ve been getting messages and texts about is Jane Schoenbrun’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.”. It’s finally hitting theaters here locally! It stars Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”) and Gillian Anderson, and it follows a queer director who is making a slasher franchise sequel and wants to cast the “final girl” from the original film, leading both women into psychological and sexual chaos. This is the third feature from Schoenbrun, whose last feature was the acclaimed “I Saw The TV Glow.”
The other film that has generated a considerable amount of buzz and good reviews is “Tony.” The film comes from Canadian director Matt Johnson (“Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie”) and it looks at 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain as he travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen. The film stars Dominic Sessa (“The Holdovers”), Emilia Jones (“Coda”) and Antonio Banderas.
Likely the biggest film hitting theaters this weekend is “Insidious: Out of the Further.”This is the sixth film in the franchise, and there is already a seventh one in the works. This installment follows a young mother who discovers she has the ability to travel into The Further, and she has the ability to bring demons back to the real world. The only person returning from the original film’s cast is Lin Shaye.
Jason Statham has his second film of the year coming out this weekend, and it is another in his long line of single word titles in “Mutiny.” Look, I really don’t need to know the plot, all I have seen from the trailer is Statham kicking ass and sometimes that’s all I need to see to be in on a film!
One additional film hitting theaters this weekend is “Spa Weekend,” which tells the story of three women who plan a simple spa weekend getaway, but it is turned into chaos when their trainwreck friend joins in. It features Leslie Mann, Anna Ferris, Michelle Buteau and Isla Fisher.
Over at the Cleveland Cinematheque (11610 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland 44106):
Thursday at 6:30 p.m. is a new documentary called “Welcome Space Brothers.” It tells the story of the Unarius Academy of Science, a UFO-channel spiritual community in California led by Ruth E. Norman, which became a public-access TV sensation in the 1980s. Director Jodi Wille will be in person for a post film Q&A!
Thursday at 9:15 p.m. and Sunday at 7:35 p.m. they will be showing a 4K restoration of “No Picnic.” It is a cinematic love letter to a pre-gentrification NYC. It features pre-fame Luis Guzmàn and Steve Buscemi!
Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. they will show the biopic “Franz,” which looks at the life of Czech writer Franz Kafka. Following the 6:30 p.m. show will be a Film Club discussion. The film will also be playing at The Nightlight Sunday-Thursday as well!
Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. is the latest from the prolific Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa in “The Samurai and the Prisoner.” Set in the 16th century, it tells the story of Lord Murashige, who must rise against foes who besiege his castle.
Saturday at 9:20 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. they continue the road trip film series with 1971’s “Vanishing Point.” This film looks at a car-delivery driver who needs to deliver a 1970 Dodge Challenger from Colorado to San Francisco in less than 15 hours.
Sunday at 6 p.m. they will show “Do You Love Me,” a playful and personal journey through Lebanon’s audiovisual memory, composed entirely of archival footage.

Over at The Nightlight Cinema (30 N High St, Akron 44308):
On top of playing “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” they will be having a week built around one of the more acclaimed films of the last decade in Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name.” This is the film that really helped launch the career of Timothèe Chalamet.
They also will be opening the documentary “Wildwood NJ,” which looks into the lives of the women and girls who inhabit the seaside town of Wildwood, New Jersey.

Over at the Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Rd, Cleveland Heights 44118):
They will continue their I Love The 90’s series with 1991’s “Delicatessen.” The inventive post-apocalyptic film was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro.
Cinemark Valley View will exclusively be playing the new music documentary “40 Years of F**king Up” which takes a look at the iconic punk band NOFX.
A few anniversaries will be celebrated on local screens this week including: “The Fast and the Furious” which celebrates its 25th anniversary, Hayao Miyazaki’s “Castle In The Sky” celebrates its 40th anniversary, and “Donnie Darko” also celebrates its 25th anniversary.
