Keep Lakewood Beautiful is making it easy to add native plants to your garden that will come back year after year. On Saturday, May 16 the nonprofit will host its annual Humus and Perennial Flower Sale from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the Old Stone House at Lakewood Park.
Offerings include hardy native plants, herbs, grasses and several varieties of flowers that feed and serve as host plants for pollinators like butterflies and bees, such as milkweed, goldenrod, coneflower and more.
From now through May 11, plants are available for pre-order through Meadow City, a nursery in Cleveland offering local native plants. Enter code “KLB” at checkout, and a portion of the proceeds will go to Keep Lakewood Beautiful to help support programming, like the Adopt-a-Spots and student gardening programs.
Shoppers will also be able to buy humus, nicknamed “black gold” the day of the sale for $5 per bag. Humus improves soil by helping it to retain moisture and providing nutrients that support beneficial microorganisms and fertilize the soil.
Cash and check will be the preferred methods of payment, but Venmo payments will also be accepted.
This annual event serves as a fundraiser for Keep Lakewood Beautiful, a volunteer-driven organization founded in 1982 to promote civic involvement in the beautification of the city of Lakewood and an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful organization.
