Cleveland City Council held its first special meeting on Monday to kick off its planning for the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) relief funds awarded by the federal government ($511 million, the most of any Ohio city). Here’s what we learned sitting in.
A survey just released from Baldwin Wallace University shows Justin Bibb ahead of Kevin Kelley in the Cleveland mayoral race by about 9 points. However, as many as 40% of those surveyed remained uncertain who they would vote for on November 2.
With Cleveland’s general elections approaching fast, organizations across the city have steadily announced mayoral forums probing candidates Kevin Kelley and Justin Bibb on a litany of Cleveland issues. In response to the flurry of these forums and other election-related events, The Land will regularly compile and update a list of events as we hear of them.
Going on five years, bike and pedestrian advocates and City of Cleveland officials who are concerned with the yearly death toll on city streets from motor vehicles have studied the causes and locations and discussed what to do about it. This month, the Vision Zero Task Force, as it’s known, is finally ready to present its action plan in a series of public meetings.
An ambitious plan to redevelop Cleveland’s east side lakefront with trails, beaches and a new offshore island took a critical step forward Friday morning. That’s when the Cleveland Planning Commission approved the Cleveland Harbor Eastern Embayment Resilience plan, also known as CHEERS, which would add more than 80 acres of new parkland and better connect residents with the water.
SomeraRoad, a development firm based in New York City and Nashville, is proposing building 203 apartment units on Bolivar Road in the Gateway District next to an office building they recently renovated. The project would bring new residents and street activity to a part of downtown that is mostly filled with daytime office uses.
Sometimes, all you need is paint (and maybe a little love, too) to create safer, more pedestrian-friendly streets. That’s one takeaway from two groups from Asiatown/Campus District and Slavic Village who presented before the Cleveland Planning Commission on Friday, Sept. 17. The groups sought approval to paint crosswalks and curb extensions on city streets to slow down traffic and make it easier to cross them.
